Handle Your Own Business Tax

Run a small business or a side hustle? You learn GST returns, deductions, depreciation and how company tax works. The yearly scramble turns into something you can do yourself.

Move Into Tax Work

Already in accounts or bookkeeping? Tax is the next step up. You cover return preparation, fringe benefit tax and company structures, then the career centre helps with your CV.

Study Around The Job

It is online and self paced, with no exams and no fixed class times. You get six months of access, so you can take it in the quiet weeks and pause in the busy ones.

Where The Skills Fit

Where These Skills Could Take You

Tax work sits in accounting firms, business services teams and the finance side of larger companies. The work is easy to picture: pulling the figures together, preparing the returns and getting them filed on time.

Taxation Officer

Working across returns and compliance for a firm or a business. The fundamentals modules are the base of it.

Tax Returns Processor

Preparing and processing returns. Calculation and return preparation is a module of its own here.

GST Returns Specialist

Handling GST for a business or its clients. Understanding GST is covered directly in the course.

Payroll Tax Officer

Where payroll meets tax. Employment law, payroll and fringe benefit tax all sit in this course.

Corporate Tax Assistant

Supporting a company tax team, where knowing how structures are taxed matters from day one.

Roles where these skills are useful, not promised outcomes. Every role is different, and some ask for accounting qualifications or experience.

Understanding GST, depreciation and fringe benefit tax each get their own module. These are the ones that catch people out every year.

Good to Know

Common Questions

Do I need any experience?

None. It opens with tax fundamentals and builds from there, so you can come to it cold.

What does it cost each week?

From $29 a week on a flexible payment plan, with no deposit and no credit check. You can also pay upfront in one payment. Enquire for the full options.

How long does the course take?

Around 140 hours at your own pace, with 6 months of access. There are no fixed class times, so it fits around work and family.

Is this only useful if I work in an accounts team?

Plenty of people take it for their own business. You learn GST, deductions, depreciation and company tax, which is the same ground whether you are doing it for an employer or for yourself.

Will this get me tax work?

It gives you what the entry level tax jobs run on: returns, GST, fringe benefit tax and company taxation. It is not a national qualification, and some firms ask for accounting study on top. What you walk away with is a working grip on New Zealand tax and 50 CPD hours on your record.

Are there exams?

There are none, ever. You are assessed on what you understand, with tutor support behind you.

Is this course accredited?

It is accredited by ICOES and the CPD Standards Office, which is accreditation for professional development. It is not NZQA accredited, so it is not a national qualification. That is a different thing. For tax work, what counts is whether you can prepare the return, and that is what this covers.

Can I get my money back if it is not for me?

Yes. There is a 10-day money back guarantee. If it is not right, you get your money back.
